This introductory course is designed to prepare students to be effective oral communicators in all aspects of public presentations including design and delivery of the public speech. The course is appropriate for all students interested in developing their public speaking knowledge and skills such as speech communication majors, future teachers, and future business leaders.

Student learning outcomes: Students (as speakers) will conclude the course with the ability to deliver coherent speeches inclusive of a distinctive introduction, body, and conclusion; including 2-3 substantive main points within the body and appropriate minor points and transitions. Students should be able to control and manage their verbal and nonverbal communication. The students (as speakers) should have delivered audience-centered speeches; that is, the audience should have (at least) gained understanding, knowledge or insight about the speakers' topics.

Class text

One text applicable to the class is  A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking  by O'Hair, Rubenstein and Stewart (2007). This is the recommended (not required) text that has been ordered for the class. I do not lecture from the text. My website, lectures, and class discussions summarize the text information.
